- Turntable (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions to Create Your Bunny Cake
Step 1: Prepare Your Cake Layers
Bake two round cake layers (8-inch) and 1 small round cake layer (4-inch). Allow them to cool completely and freeze so they’re easier to handle. You can use my famous vanilla cake recipe or your preferred boxed cake mix.
Step 2: Stack and Fill Your Cold Cakes
Stack and fill 2 large cake layers as you normally would on your cake board or platter. If you’re a beginner, avoid using super soft fillings like cheesecake. Aim for something like buttercream for this Easter Bunny Cake.
Step 3: Create the Easter Bunny Shape
Cut a wedge off your cake (do not throw this out—we’ll use it later) so the cake can stand up. This will create the bunny’s body. Cut more cake off as needed to adjust the height of your bunny’s body.
Step 4: Create the Easter Bunny’s Head
Take your small cake layer and attach it to the front of the bunny’s body for the head. Carve down the cake to make the bunny’s head smaller if needed. Try to keep it as round as possible.
Step 5: Create the Easter Bunny’s Ears
Using the leftover wedge we cut off earlier, create the ears of the Easter Bunny cake. Cut 2 triangles out of the leftover cake and attach them to the cake using buttercream as needed.
Step 6: Crumb Coat
Once you’re happy with the shape of the bunny, crumb coat the entire cake in buttercream to avoid crumbs in the final product. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes or until the buttercream solidifies.
Step 7: Frost and Decorate your Easter Bunny Cake
Apply another layer of buttercream to the cake, ensuring no cake is peeping through. Smooth it to your best ability, then cover it in coconut flakes. This gives the bunny its furry texture.
Optional: Add eyes, mouth, etc., to create a face for the bunny. Decorate the cake board/platter with candy, edible grass, etc. Have fun and get creative!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use store-bought cake mix? Absolutely! A boxed cake mix works perfectly and saves time. I personally just love our delicious cake recipes—they are so easy and taste delicious!
What if I don’t like coconut? You can omit the coconut and simply use textured frosting techniques for fur or even white chocolate shavings. This Easter Bunny Cake is that easy, anything will work!
What type of cake works best for carving? A sturdy, moist cake like vanilla, butter cake, or pound cake works best for shaping. You want something that holds together well—extra fluffy cakes might fall apart when standing upright. Be sure to use frozen cake so the process is easier. I do this when Im decorating any cake, which you can learn more about in my How to Frost a Cake like a Pro Tutorial.
How to Store Your Cake
Store your Easter Bunny Cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Allow the cake to sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before serving for optimal taste and texture.
