If you’ve been dreaming about starting your own business, there’s no better time than 2025 to take the leap. Whether you’re a content creator, baker, artist, or someone with a passion you want to monetize, this guide is here to help you turn your ideas into reality. I’ve been there—starting from scratch and growing a business I love. By 20, I’d built a business generating over $100K a year, and now I’m sharing everything I’ve learned to help you get started.

  3. Flexible Work Models: Remote work and gig culture are booming, offering opportunities for creators to work on their terms.

If you’re hesitating, remember this: no one else has your vision. Your business idea deserves to come to life.

My Journey: From Baking with Grandma to Building a Dream Business

My love for baking started early. As a kid, I spent countless afternoons in the kitchen with my grandma, learning how to mix, bake, and decorate. Those moments sparked a passion that never left me.

Fast forward to high school, my sister forced me to start posting photos of my cakes on Instagram. Reluctantly, I did it. At first, it was just for fun—sharing pictures of my creations. But something amazing happened: people started ordering from me. Little did I know, I had a small business on my hands.

As social media evolved, I noticed videos were becoming more popular. I realized I needed to show my personality, not just my cakes. Once I leaned into that, everything changed. My business blew up, and soon I landed opportunities like appearing on the hit Netflix show Is It Cake?, the Sherri Show TV, CNBC, Ebony Magazine, and more.

By staying consistent and true to my craft, I surpassed $100K in earnings before I turned 20. Eventually, as my brand grew, I transitioned into content creation full-time, partnering with top brands and moving away from selling cakes. But my end goal? To get on TV and share my journey with an even bigger audience. Enough about me, lets get your dream business started.

  • What problems can I solve for people?
  • How can I turn my skills into a product or service?

For example, I started my baking business by sharing all the random desserts I would bake on social media. Over time, I refined my niche, creating custom cakes and content that resonated with my audience.

Step 2: Create a Business Plan

A business plan doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple outline:

  • Mission Statement: Why does your business exist?
  • Target Audience: Who are you trying to reach?
  • Products/Services: What will you offer?
  • Revenue Streams: How will you make money?
  • Marketing Plan: How will you attract customers?

Take the time to map out your goals. It’s okay if things change along the way, but having a plan gives you direction.

Step 3: Build Your Brand

Your brand is how people perceive your business. It’s more than just a logo; it’s your voice, visuals, and values. Here’s how to create a strong brand when starting your dream business in 2025.

  1. Choose a Memorable Name: Pick something unique and reflective of your business.
  2. Design a Logo: Use tools like Canva or hire a designer if you can. Keep in mind if you use Canva you do NOT own your logo and designs. This can become a big issue later on. I personally suggest hiring a professional designer for the best quality and to save yourself time. Being an entrepreneur means knowing when to delegate, and me personally, I know I can’t make no logo hahaha. I highly recommend Tiamera Ellen if you are looking for a graphic designer.
  3. Develop a Consistent Aesthetic: From your Instagram feed to your website, ensure your visuals align.
  4. Craft a Story: Share why you started your business and what makes it special.

When I built my brand, I leaned into my big personality and love for baking, making sure every piece of content felt like “me.”

Social media is your best friend as a new business owner. It’s free, powerful, and connects you with your audience instantly. Here’s how to use it effectively:

  • Pick the Right Platforms: Focus on 1-2 platforms where your audience hangs out. For me, it’s Instagram and TikTok.
  • Post Consistently: Show up regularly with valuable content.
  • Engage with Your Audience: Reply to comments, answer DMs, and create polls to understand your audience better.
  • Show Behind-the-Scenes: People love seeing the real, unpolished side of your journey. Record everything and share!

My social media secret is remembering the three pillars: your content needs to either entertain, educate, or inform. If you can accomplish these, you’re destined for success. Consistently hitting one or more of these pillars ensures your audience stays engaged and finds value in what you create.

Step 5: Build Multiple Revenue Streams

One of the smartest ways to create a sustainable business is by diversifying your income. Relying on a single revenue stream can be risky, especially when market trends change. Starting your dream business in 2025 means building multiple revenue streams and here’s how to do it:

  1. Sell Products or Services: Start with your core offering, whether it’s physical products like baked goods or services like custom design work.
  2. Offer Digital Products: Create downloadable content like eBooks, online courses, or printables that align with your niche. For example, I could sell a digital cookbook with my top recipes.
  3. Affiliate Marketing: Partner with brands you love and earn a commission by recommending their products. Share affiliate links through your blog, social media, or YouTube videos.
  4. Content Creation: Monetize your content by working with brands on sponsored posts, YouTube ads, or paid partnerships. Once I shifted to content creation full-time, this became my primary revenue stream.
  5. Subscriptions or Memberships: Offer exclusive content or benefits through platforms like Patreon or Substack, where loyal fans can support you.
  6. Workshops and Events: Host virtual or in-person workshops to teach skills related to your business. For example, I could host a class on decorating cakes or starting a baking business.
  7. Merchandising: Sell branded merchandise like apparel, mugs, or tote bags that resonate with your audience.

By creating multiple revenue streams, you protect your business from fluctuations and open up opportunities to grow exponentially. Start with one or two streams and expand as you gain traction. In my case, I started with custom cakes. I noticed that some seasons were slower than others, but I also saw other bakers commenting and asking for tutorials on cake designs. Thus, I created a digital class to help fellow bakers, which expanded my income.

  1. Don’t Compare Yourself: It’s easy to feel behind when you see others thriving. Focus on your progress. To this day, this is my biggest struggle; however, it’s important to remember what’s meant for you won’t miss you. The struggles you are currently facing are only setting you up for the future opportunities in store for you.
  2. Embrace Mistakes: Every failure is a learning opportunity. When I burnt a batch of cupcakes, I used it as content to connect with my audience. If my posts haven’t been performing well, I reanalyze my content and see what I can improve.
  3. Celebrate Small Wins: Whether it’s your first sale or a kind comment, these moments matter. Be proud of yourself for even taking this step.

Financial Tips for New Entrepreneurs when Starting a Business

Managing finances is crucial when starting a business. Here’s how to set yourself up for success:

  5. Reinvest in Growth: Allocate a portion of your earnings to improve your business. This is imperative in the beginning in order to grow your business to higher levels.

Here’s what’s working in 2025 for creators like us:

  1. Focus on Community: Build relationships with your audience. People support brands they feel connected to. Show your personality, your face, tell your unique story.
  2. Diversify Revenue Streams: Offer multiple ways for customers to engage with your business (e.g., products, services, and digital downloads).
  3. Use AI Tools: Platforms like ChatGPT can help you brainstorm content, write captions, and save time. I can’t suggest this enough especially if you struggle in certain parts of your business.
  4. Keep Learning: Stay updated on trends and tools in your industry.
  5. Collaborate: Partner with other creators or businesses to reach new audiences. This could be as simple as bringing business cards to your local salons and barber shops.
